In the last several weeks, LCHS has experienced an increase in students engaging in, and being victims of, cyberbullying.  We understand as parents, you are deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of your children, especially in today's digital age where social media plays such a significant role in their lives. It is with this shared concern in mind that we would like to address the issue of social media bullying and the challenges faced by schools in combating it.

Social media platforms have become a part of our children's lives, offering countless opportunities for connection, learning, and self-expression. However, they also present a platform for inappropriate activities such as cyberbullying, which can have severe consequences for the mental and emotional health of our students. We strive to instill kindness, positive internet use, responsible digital citizenship in our students.

As educators, we are committed to fostering a safe and secure learning environment, both within and outside the classroom. We want to acknowledge that schools face considerable challenges in addressing social media bullying effectively. While we are dedicated to creating a safe environment within our school walls, the virtual world of social media often operates independently. Many instances of cyberbullying occur off-campus, on personal devices, and through fake-accounts making it difficult for us to intervene effectively. In recent weeks, we have reported various accounts to social media providers and have had limited success in getting accounts shutdown.  Generally, if/when an account is eliminated, another account is created soon after.

To tackle this issue, we believe that a collaborative effort between parents, students, and the school is essential. Together, we can create a safer digital landscape for our children. Here are some ways in which we can work together:

  1. Open Communication: Encourage your child to talk to you about their online experiences. Create an atmosphere where they feel comfortable discussing any concerns or incidents.
  2. Education: Talk to your student(s) about responsible internet use, online etiquette, and the consequences of cyberbullying. Empower them with the knowledge and tools to protect themselves and others online.
  3. Reporting and Prevention: Teach your child how to report instances of cyberbullying to the school and social media platforms. Prompt reporting is crucial for timely intervention.
  4. Privacy Settings: Ensure your child's social media accounts have appropriate privacy settings. Regularly review and update these settings together.
  5. Monitoring: Consider using parental control software or apps to monitor your child's online activity, but always maintain open and honest communication about this.
  6. Support and Counseling: If your child becomes a victim of cyberbullying, seek help from the school's counseling services or external counselors to address the emotional impact.

Tips for Reporting and Prevention

  • Encourage your child to save evidence of cyberbullying, such as screenshots or messages.
  • Report cyberbullying to the school and, if necessary, to the relevant social media platform. Students can also report cyberbullying through Safe2Help (found on the back of each student ID and our school website).
  • Block or mute individuals engaging in bullying behavior.
  • Set limits on screen time and encourage a healthy balance between online and offline activities.
  • Foster empathy and kindness within your family to promote respectful online interactions.

LHCS is committed to working tirelessly to create a secure learning environment for your children, and your support is invaluable in achieving this goal. Together, we can help our students navigate the digital world responsibly and safely. If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to reach out. Your feedback is essential as we continue to refine our approach to addressing social media bullying.
