Limestone Community High School Parents, Guardians, and Students,
I hope this message finds you well! I am writing to inform you of a new addition to our Co-Curricular Code, specifically a Co-Curricular Attendance Policy, which is now part of the LCHS Student Handbook. This policy, officially adopted at the October 22, 2024, Board of Education meeting, underscores our commitment to supporting students’ diverse interests and talents while prioritizing their academic success.
A growing concern for our school community has been student attendance. This new policy reinforces our belief that Student-Athletes and participants in co-curricular activities are, first and foremost, students. In alignment with this commitment, we emphasize that attendance in class and academic achievement should remain the top priority for all students, especially those who wish to participate in our athletic programs, clubs, and other co-curricular activities.
The new Co-Curricular Attendance Policy, found on page 29 of the LCHS Student Handbook, states:
“In order to participate in practices, rehearsals, performances, or contests, students must be in attendance for their last four classes (5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th periods). In the case of a funeral or unavoidable appointment, exceptions can be made, but only in conjunction with the administration and through parent contact prior to the situation when possible.”
This policy is an essential step toward a broader goal outlined in the Limestone Community High School Strategic Plan: improving overall student attendance. Enhancing attendance rates, especially for students engaged in co-curricular activities, is a critical objective of our plan, as it directly supports our mission to promote academic success, personal growth, and responsibility.
The Co-Curricular Attendance Policy will be enacted and enforced starting with the winter sports season. We believe the success of this policy will depend on consistency and ongoing communication. If a student has a legitimate reason for an absence, we ask that parents communicate with the Deans’ Office and/or Activities Director in advance of the absence. We are here to support our students, and open communication will help ensure they remain on track academically while fulfilling their co-curricular commitments.
Thank you for your partnership in reinforcing the importance of education and responsibility. Together, we can help our students thrive in the classroom and beyond.
Sincerely,
Keith Brown, Superintendent
Limestone Community High School
